อัตราการว่างงาน (Unemployment Rate) เป็นตัวเลขที่แสดงอัตราร้อยละของผู้ว่างงานในระบบเศรษฐกิจเทียบกับกำลังแรงงานรวม ซึ่งสามารถบ่งบอกสภาพเศรษฐกิจโดยรวมว่าเป็นไปในทิศทางที่กำลังขยายตัวหรือหดตัว คือ ในช่วงที่เศรษฐกิจดีหรือเศรษฐกิจขยายตัว อัตราการว่างงานมักจะต่ำ เนื่องจากบริษัทส่วนใหญ่ จะทำการขยายงานจึงต้องมีการจ้างงานเพิ่มขึ้น แต่ในช่วงที่เศรษฐกิจซบเซาหรือ หดตัว อัตราการว่างงานมักจะสูง เนื่องจากบริษัทจะทำการลดจำนวนคนงาน และไม่จ้างพนักงานเพิ่มขึ้น เนื่องจากจะช่วยให้ กิจการมีค่าใช้จ่ายที่ลดลงนั่นเอง
